Was the theft staged? Forum comments, no evidence reported
Theories are not facts. This section collects speculation that others have published, including unverified forum comments, each with its source. We do not endorse any theory or say that it is true, and nothing here accuses any person or company of wrongdoing.
A Hacker News commenter wrote "inside job /exit strategy" on the night of the theft, which suggests the theft was staged or used as a way out. The comment is one line and gives no reasoning. A Reddit commenter compared the situation with exit scams while saying Binance was probably not one, and another Hacker News commenter disagreed with the suggestion. These are unverified forum comments.
This is a theory, not an established fact. First seen . Updated .
What the evidence does and does not show
We found no investigator, official or news report that says the theft was staged. Several independent firms traced transfers from Binance wallets to attacker addresses, token issuers froze between about $2.8B and $3B of the funds, and the FBI said North Korea was responsible. These facts do not rule out every possible explanation, but no source we have captured offers evidence for staging, as of 2026-11-01.

Elliptic has verified $2.85 billion of frozen or seized funds, 44% of the theft, almost all of it USDT and USDC. The attacker is swapping the rest into ETH and other assets that cannot be frozen, and moving funds between blockchains, using automated scripts that run around the clock.

i do however agree binance has a high probability of not being an exit scam BECAUSE if 6b was their hot wallet you cant possibly imagine how much is in the cold wallet
